Our History

María has always pursued the American Dream. She sold tamales on 4th Street and became known as the Lady of the Tamales.

With the support of her husband, she promised her children a college education and a better quality of life. When the 2008 financial crisis hit, she lost her home and had to rethink her business, ultimately selling homemade food in all the shops on 4th Street. 2013 saw her open La Fonda, a Mexican snacks restaurant.

Unfortunately, when the Mexican Consulate moved, business went downhill. She then returned to selling tamales to order, and added chilate and Guerrero pork filling. In 2017, she opened Chevita’s Juice & Bagels.

Today, she’s the sole owner and still working to make it successful. She’s still the friendly Lady of 4th Street, chasing her dreams with the same enthusiasm as ever.
